Ketchum's Reusable Patuflex RFID Leg Band

Tom Lynch | April 22, 2014

The RFID leg band offers a quick and convenient way to identify and upload information for goats and sheep in various dairy parlor and barn settings. This leg band tracking system provides easy visual and electronic identification access for producers who are developing individual animal databases. These databases can then be personalized to trace specific animal medical history, breeding history, as well as giving production information and statistics.

The RFID band is 166mm (6.54”) in length and 32mm in width (1.26”), opening to a maximum diameter of 35mm (1.38”).

The band is quickly applied by:

  1. Wrapping the band around the appropriate lower portion of the leg, ensuring a secure fit (this is just above the fetlock of the animal, covering the lower portion of the cannon bone)
  2. Inserting the r-clip through both holes to lock the band
  3. Turning the leg band to ensure the management number is visible
  4. For reuse, remove the r-clip with a screwdriver or a set of pliers and repeat steps 1-3

The polyurethane ether material, of which the band is composed, has been tested to show excellent resistance from hydrolysis and microorganism exposure. This is important as durability issues are different with a leg band vs. traditional RFID ear tags. The leg band is also UV, weather moisture and chemical resistant.
